# Foreground Foreground checks whether a business is mentioned when AI search engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Grok) are asked about its category, scores the result from 0-100, and tracks the score over time. The premise: an AI-generated answer has room for only a few names — Foreground checks whether a given business is one of them. ## How it works Foreground sends 5 category-relevant prompts (e.g. "who does emergency plumbing in Rotterdam") — phrased the way a real customer would ask, covering direct recommendations, competitor comparisons, and "who are the leaders in X" questions — to 4 AI models: OpenAI's GPT-5 mini, Google's Gemini 3 Flash, Anthropic's Claude Haiku 4.5, and xAI's Grok 4.6. That's 20 checks per scan. Each model is queried directly against its own provider's API, using that provider's own web-search grounding tool — so answers reflect live web results rather than each model's static training data. For each completed check, Foreground records whether the business is mentioned, whether it's the first business mentioned, and how it ranks relative to named competitors. This is presence detection, not sentiment analysis — a mention counts whether the model recommended the business enthusiastically or only in comparison to a competitor. ## Scoring Each completed check earns credit based on where the business ranked in that answer: full credit for being the first business mentioned, decaying partial credit for 2nd, 3rd, or further down, and no credit if never mentioned. Checks are also weighted by prompt intent — a direct buying-decision prompt ("what's the best X for Y?") moves the score more than a broad "who are the leaders in this category?" prompt. The result is a 0-100 score: Leading (80-100), Visible (50-79), Weak (1-49), Invisible (0).
